Where the Wild Roses Grow.
For the first time in years, I saw the video clip to the Nick Cave/Kylie Minogue duet "Where the Wild Roses Grow". I know Nick's songs have never exactly been Britney bubblegum pop, but good God, that song and videoclip is plain disturbing.
I have to admit, on a completely superficial level, topping that bloody annoying budgie in Kylie Minogue is fun to think about, but actually seeing it happen on the video clip... oy vey.
Sticking the rose in her dead mouth at the end of the song was also rather disturbing on several levels. You know if anything not scene the actual 'killing' take place on screen makes it all that more surreal and creepy. If the killing was on screen, then our desensitized habits in todays CNN 24 hour news culture would kick in, but since we are left to our imagination... then it adds that extra layer of haunting. Very Hitchcockian.
The one major problem is both with the song and the video clip is Nick Cave sounded like he phoned in his performance. I expect more from this man. But I don't know whether he was suppose to sound like he couldn't care less or he was trying to get into the psyche of somebody that just knocked off Kylie Minogue (thus not the level of singing/performance we expect from Nick).
Kylie actually pulled herself off quiet well. I have never been a fan of any degree, but I cannot deny when she wants to sing, she has a decent voice.
