The Pi Kappa Alpha House Never Loses.

Danny invited me to play poker with his frat brothers tonight, and I happily joined. Mainly because I have been looking for a decent, regular poker game to join for months now and also... I am/was extremely curious about this thing called the greek system.

Okay having went to University in a country where the term "Greek" means some disgusting looking Gyro at the cafeteria, I never competely understood what it was all about, and what little I did know, was extremely tainted by your standard fair of Hollywood/MTV junk. It was really a pleasant night where I met alot of nice young men (of course seeing a bunch of 18 year olds run about hooting at WWE on TV did make me feel slightly old). :-p

Anyway, the poker was fun and the guys at Pi Kappa Alpha where extremely nice. Of course I lost pretty badly (well not that badly since Danny did completely fold before I did), but then again I wasn't playing to win (or else I would of been more agressive). Miss Manners says it one should loose the first time. Heh. Okay seriously there where several better players at the table then me, but it was just fun to play. And it was only five dollars. Not exactly breaking the bank.

Seriously I wonder what it would've been like if I went to University in America and thus had the opportunity to even join a frat. I don't know if I would've been accepted. Danny thinks I would've. But then again Danny is judging 25-year-old Robert whome he knows and not 18-year-old Robert who he never met. 18-year-old Robert was the shy and retiring type that went to University, did his work and went home, and what little socializing 18-year-old Robert did was with a bunch of bitchy girls whome always put him down and that 25-year-old Robert would not tolerate in a million years.

Then again the entire university system between the United States and Australia is different. In Australia the focus is on academics, we don't have sporting scholarships (we don't even have sporting teams at a University level). Scholarships are awarded to those with grey matter, not those with triceps. Socializing at university is done through Clubs & Societies and Student Government, unlike the entire plethora of ways to socialise here in America.

So arguably if I was a naive and wide-eye 18-year-old entering the University system here in America instead of Australia, would I have done things differently? I would say most likely. My university back in Australia wasn't known for its robust Clubs & Societies (in fact the joke was if a Club managed to get its members together ONCE after the initial O-Week sign up, it was a raging success). Thus that option was void for me at Deakin. Student Government also wasn't something a first year got involved with anyway, since my Campus had no form of First Year Student Representation.

When I did get involved with Student Government in my Forth Year (yeah late bloomer), I did come out of my shell (and out of a few other things) and really found my niche. It also helped I moved campuses to the more active campus with a heartbeat in terms of social life and C&S, unlike my old campus where C&S and social life was DOA.

Anyway, the question is moot, since it never happened and outside of a few poker games, never will. Though I do have to wonder what it would've been like.
